Description

Targeted monitoring and lifecycle disruption for Guava Moth (Coscinoptycha improbana)

The NoPests® Guava Moth Pheromone Monitoring Trap is a highly targeted monitoring tool designed to attract and capture male guava moths, helping growers track pest activity and reduce successful mating. By intercepting males, the reproductive cycle is disrupted, leaving females unfertilised and reducing future larval pressure within fruit.

Guava moth adults are small, black-and-white speckled moths with an approximate 15 mm wingspan and a short adult life of around two weeks. Eggs are laid in clusters on host fruit and hatch into larvae that bore directly into developing fruit, where they feed internally. This feeding causes internal rotting, brown patches, frass, mould development, and can result in premature fruit drop and unmarketable produce.

Larvae pass through four instars, remaining hidden within fruit until maturity. Once fruit falls to the ground, larvae exit to pupate in debris beneath host trees, continuing the lifecycle. Because damage occurs internally and early, effective monitoring is criticalfor timely intervention.

When to Use

Install traps at bud break, before fruit becomes susceptible

Traps should be operating before adult moth flight begins

Check traps weeklyand record moth counts to track population trends

Trap Placement

Hang traps near the top of the canopy, approximately 2–3 metres above ground

Distribute traps uniformly throughout the orchard

Place additional traps in known hot spots

Never use fewer than two traps per orchard

Recommended trap density:

< 12 ha:1 trap per 4 ha

12–32 ha:1 trap per 3 ha

> 32 ha:Increase trap numbers proportionally to ensure coverage

Assembling the Trap

Unfold one sticky insertand place it sticky-side up inside the trap

Open one foil sachet and place one PHEROCON® pheromone lurein the centre of the sticky base

Use tweezersto avoid contamination

Insert the wire hanger and hang the trap as described above

Ongoing Maintenance

Inspect traps at least weekly

Remove trapped moths to maintain full sticky surface effectiveness

Replace sticky inserts and pheromone lures every 4 weeks, or sooner if contaminated by dust or insect debris

Dispose of used components in general rubbish

Important Use Notes

Do not cut or open the PHEROCON® lure

The pheromone is designed for slow, controlled release through the polymer vial

Only open lure sachets when ready to use

Use one pheromone lure per trap only
